Barcelona - May 2011

We found Barcelona to have a little bit of everything. It had majestic churches and other architecture, good food, hosted the Olympics, and even a beach! We found we spent most of our time admiring Gaudi's work. We spent several hours exploring Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila (La Pedrera), stopped by Casa Batllo, and strolled through Park Guell. Compared to Madrid, we found Barcelona to be much more expensive. Part of that was due to the International Auto Show being in town for the weekend. That added more sting to an already weak US dollar vs the Euro. More photos from Spain: Gaudi's Sagrada Familia Segovia. Madrid. Bullfight in Madrid.

 • Leg of lamb from a Catalan style restaurant near our hotel. This restaurant was also recommended by the ex-pat from our hotel. We wanted to get a meal nearby before catching a flamenco show later in the evening. Lots of shows also serve dinner, but the reviews don't recommend getting dinner with the show. This turned out to be one of our favorite meals of the trip.

 • Flamenco. We caught a performance at Palacio del Flamenco. This place was recommended by the hotel staff, but since they had vouchers, I doubt it was an unbiased opinion. However, it had much better reviews on Yelp than the place on La Rambla, so we tried it.
We enjoyed the Flamenco dancing, but not so much the Flamenco music. I think the music is definitely an acquired taste.
Video seemed to be the appropriate medium for giving some of the flavor of the performance. Surprisingly, the only restriction they had was no flash.

 • Restaurante Salamanca. Thanks for the recommendation, Clarence!
We actually had lunch here on Friday and Saturday. We found that the food was much better on Friday. They were so much busier on Saturday and must pre-cook a lot of the food to keep up with demand.
