Segovia - May 2011

We took a day trip to Segovia. Segovia is a small city north of Madrid that's famous for its still standing Roman aqueduct and Alcazar, a castle that's said to have inspired the Disney castle. The Roman aqueduct is the first thing you see after you get dropped off by the bus from the train station.

This is just outside of Alcazar.

Alcazar, probably built in the 12th century. Besides being the home of kings, it also served as a prison for more than two centuries after Madrid became the capital.

This room is called the Galley Room due to the shape of its ceiling.

This is the Room of the Monarchs. Near the ceiling is the frieze which shows all the monarchs of Asturias, Castile, and Leon.

Cochinillo asado - roast suckling pig, a specialty of Segovia. We went to Restaurante Jose Maria, recommended by lonely planet. We each got a quarter of the suckling pig.

However, if you order cochinillo asado, all you get is the pig. No vegetables. You'll have to order those separately. I think the meal did come with bread, though.

This was an interesting house with lots of stone protrusions on its walls. A small sign said that they served a defensive purpose.
